“Super Sleuth”

Edward’s day looked very packed
The meetings were oh so stacked
He wished that he could subtract
In case things got a bit off track

But plans were set weeks ago
And being a late no-show
For a case of tennis elbow
Was a big Edward no-no

So early arrival gave him time
To check on work he’d assigned
Then he stopped right on a dime
When his first guest began the grind

‘Dallan’ was his name he said
“It’s Irish like the soda bread”
A chair stood empty but instead
He sat on Edward’s hat, now dead

“Got any kids?” Dallan asked
Somehow he looked right past
The office walls that were packed
With photos he had amassed

“I’ve heard you have to choose
Is it Cubs or Sox, win or lose?”
Guess he missed the big clues
The hat and shirt in Cubby blue

Down to business Dallan did go
“How do you rank – high or low?”
Didn’t he see the company logo
Was a giant Edward photo?

“I’m selling tailored suits direct
For big and tall men to look perfect”
But the last time Edward checked
He was five foot six and thin necked

Edward made up a reason to end
And not a penny did he spend
He wished Dallan a good weekend
Then to his hat he did tend

He warmed his coffee up a bit
And decided to move on from it
But before he had a chance to sit
His next guest was there to wit

He knocked politely saying “Hi”
“My name is Argus Adelphi.
We met in New York last July
Thanks for letting me come by”

He sat down with due care
And said “I love Fred Astaire”
Pointing to a picture there
To the left of Edward’s chair

Argus mentioned Notre Dame
When he saw the diploma framed
“Did you see this weekend’s game?”
“Yes I did!” Edward exclaimed

Argus said “I saw your new display
In the windows at Bombay.
The organic cooking spray
Will be a hit with gourmets”

“And I see you favor Lord & Taylor
They are a stylish retailer
I think you’ll like our blazer
We buy them by the tractor trailer”

An hour later Argus departed
A new relationship started
Not because he was bighearted
He just noticed things

Author’s note:
“Dallan” is an Irish name meaning “blind”
“Argus” is a Greek name meaning “all-seeing”

  1. Good lesson for my day: I will be observant! I’m working on resealing my driveway, but I will interact with my wife when she gets home from her work…I will more Ethan likely go to the gym after I am done with my driveway…I will probably check Facebook…so there will be opportunities to be observant of people’s lives and respond appropriately.
