“A Dead Flower”

I felt a yearning in my life
For strength and tenderness
So I offered all my love
To end this loneliness

One day a tiny heartbeat
Rose from the prickly grass
In a rhythm that repeated
A promise love would last

At first we shared our secrets
And I dreamed at night again
But as the seasons changed
You just took and I just gave

You took and I just gave

When love’s in bloom
Show it the sun
Let the roots spread deeply and wide
But if your tears fall
Like a shower
Don’t let them water a dead flower

Like wetted lips of pink
Under a crimson sun
The colors used to burst each day
From you, my cherished one

But as the summer passed
All the colors turned to black
Even so, I didn’t let go
Because I wanted love to last

Then finally I heard them
Words unspoken and said
And a certain voice of truth
Screamed inside my head

Screamed inside my head

When love’s in bloom
Show it the sun
Let the roots spread deeply and wide
But if your tears fall
Like a shower
Don’t let them water a dead flower

It’ll hurt to let you go
But not as much as staying

When love’s in bloom
Show it the sun
Let the roots spread deeply and wide
But don’t let your tears
Fall every hour
Just to water a dead flower

  1. Powerful poem with much depth Dennis. Cuts to the core of emotions. I hope all is well with you and your loved ones. Did you get my email about Paul and the COD writing group I sent you yesterday. Jim R
